Cabochon Ruby and Diamond Clip Earrings Mounted by Cartier

$85,000

Created circa the 1950s-1960s, these cabochon ruby and diamond earrings are designed and mounted by Cartier in 18K gold and platinum. Each high relief form is designed as an elongated mass of variously-sized cabochon rubies interspersed with round-cut diamonds, trailing drops with diamond tendrils and a cabochon ruby cluster. Cartier created these earings from gems supplied by the original client. Inspired by the colors and forms of Indian jewelry and decorative arts, these earrings suggest nature’s opulence in blooming red blossoms with diamond leaves and dewdrops.

The variety and grandeur of Indian floral motifs in textiles and architectural ornament animated designers of Western jewelry from the early 20th century and beyond. The complex rendering and symbolism of floral motifs in India infuses all of Hindu, Mughal and Persian traditions in art, ranging from Pichwai painting and Bengali embroidery to Mughal miniatures and the floral and foliate textiles made by Muslim weaving communities.
