Ernest Leveillé Wheel-Carved Serpents Cameo Glass Vase
This cameo glass vase, by Ernest Leveillé for Escalier de Cristal, features two wheel-carved red serpents in high relief intertwined around the outer surface. The Art Nouveau serpents meet with animated expressions at the center of the composition, their eyes wide and their mouth agape showing hissing tongues. Their bodies coil around a vase of similar, but brightened earthen tones that run in painterly striations down the piece vertically. The background glass has a moss-like texture that appears trapped within the vessel. The piece is completed with a gilt bronze base.
