Émile Gallé "Pivoines" Glass Table Lamp

The Art Nouveau "Pivoines" glass table lamp from Émile Gallé features a vibrant, detailed decoration of crimson red peonies wrapped around a bold yellow base and shade, surrounded by foliage of plum-colored leaves. The patinated bronze mounts replicate the foliage theme, while the terminals are decorated with scarab beetle motifs, reflecting, if subtly, the Egyptomania of the time in France.

Though Émile Gallé is well celebrated for his work in glass, and particularly his work with glass etching, many—if not most—of his celebrated ouvre is in a far smaller scale than this piece. This lamp is particularly special, in that is serves as such a marvelously large canvas for Gallé's detailed, texturing work.
