The cross—or “croix” in French—of Lorraine is the cardinal symbol of the the province of Lorraine in France, which was lost in the Franco-Prussian War in the 1870s. One of the heartlands of the Art Nouveau movement, where the famed École de Nancy was located, Lorraine's patriotic symbol found its way into many French Art Nouveau creations, and in this case, in the signature of the maker.
