Camille Gauthier Walnut and Glass Vitrine

$45,000

Camille Gauthier's master woodwork is perfectly represented in this French Art Nouveau walnut vitrine—in ash and fruitwood—featuring clematis blooms depicted in marquetry and deep carving. The vitrine has two lockable storage areas with corresponding keys, each with a shelf, as well as two drawers that swing out from the body. There is an additional shelf in the glass-fronted area near the top of the piece, ideal for displaying treasures, while the vitrine's trio of legs are intricately decorated with carved roots.

Although nearly every aspect of this marvelous vitrine is of note, a special spotlight is deserved for the deep carving work, which creates a mesmerizing motif of positive and negative space at eye level on the piece. The clematis flowers here seem frozen in time, as opposed to carved in wood, as they perch gently on their stalks at the front and center of the composition.
