Under the French Ancien Regime, innovative royal jewelers set diamonds in silver, a new and gorgeous look which soon caught on across the Channel. Silver-topped gold was a later, 19th century innovation which preserved the enhanced beauty diamonds displayed when mounted in silver, while the soft, non-reactive gold interior protected the wearer’s skin.
