Burgun & Schverer "Irises" Cameo Glass Vase

$19,500

This cameo glass vase, by Burgun & Schverer, features "Irises" in a stunning display of French Art Nouveau style. With intercalaire decoration of lavender irises with green stems on a carved brilliant rose-colored ground, the bright fuchsia background of the composition intensifies around the upper portion in order to provide exquisite contrast to the delicately rendered, highly dimensional but lightly-colored iris blooms, then tapers in hue to a lighter shade around the stronger green of the swaying leaves that accompany the blossoms.

In the Victorian "Language of Flowers," which would have been widely understood during the turn of the 20th century, irises held different meaning depending on the color of the bloom. White irises, like those pictured here, are some of the few that have a singular meaning, as they stand for purity. The depiction of these white irises at the beginning stages of wilting could perhaps stand as a symbol of innocence lost.
