This romantic glass pâte de verre paperweight, entitled "La Femme Couchée," was designed by Alfred Finot and executed by Amalric Walter. The French Art Nouveau piece is cast in the form of a female nude reclining, with light brown hair sliding down her back in sinuous lines, appearing on a bed of autumnal-colored leaves that meld seamlessly with her golden locks as they cascade into the foliage.

Images of the nude female figure with flowing golden locks harken back to the Renaissance era, when that became a particularly popular way of depicting the blessed Mary Magdalene. Magdalene, like this figure, was often depicted in nature or in the wilderness, as the saint supposedly became a hermit in the wild after the death of Christ.
