“Peacock” Tiffany Lamp

A Tiffany Studios New York Peacock leaded glass and bronze table lamp. The peacock was one of Tiffany’s favorite motifs. Here, brilliantly colored peacock feathers against a rich purple ground create the pattern of the shade with the quills of the feathers prominently visible and the twenty peacock eyes arranged in two staggered rows. Brick borders of green and yellow mottled glass and a scalloped apron further decorate the shade which sits atop a patinated bronze “Peacock” base specially designed for it. The play of light through the mottled glass, with its regal color palate, imbues the shade with the iridescence and beguiling mystery of real peacock feathers. “Elizabethan” Tiffany Lamp

A Tiffany Studios New York "Elizabethan" leaded glass and bronze table lamp. The shade is comprised of eight panels. The typically arabesque design stems from a purplish-blue centered oval shape, surrounded by thin strips of mottled yellow and orange glass. A network of sinuous serpentine forms originates at the oval and spreads in every direction. Twenty-four assorted jewels add extra richness to each panel. In this fantasy of shape and color, each eye detects different images of flowers, figures, and faces. The workmanship of this lamp is particularly noteworthy, both because of the large number of leaded pieces involved and the intricacy of the winding and twisting shapes. In addition, each purplish-blue segment is composed of a double layer of glass. While this technique was often employed in Tiffany windows, one rarely encounters it in the construction of shades. The shade sits atop a rare gilt bronze Renaissance style base, in the Four Virtues pattern, with four light sockets and a tapering square columnar standard depicting a different woman on each of the four sides above the inscriptions Veritas, Charitas, Fides and Puritas (Truth, Charity, Loyalty, and Purity).
