A French Art Nouveau wheel-carved cameo glass vase by Emile Gallé, featuring a large carved purple and orange iris flower against a two-toned clear and purple ground. Gallé’s observational skills and study of flora rivaled botanists of his day and he published several articles on horticulture for the Lorraine region. His scientific interests undoubtedly informed his creative process. The wheel-carving technique allowed him to articulate the delicate veining of the flower petals and leaves. Silver foil, suspended between the layers of glass, adds an abstract element to the vase. Similarly, the artist’s color palate plays upon sunrise and sunset and the allegory of day and night. French Art Nouveau Orchide Vase by Daum

An artistic French Art Nouveau orchidée vase by Daum featuring pink cameo overlay naturalistically modeled as a languid orchid. The influences of Japanese culture permeated fin de siècle Paris and could be felt in museums and in homes. Similarly, a nascent fascination with natural forms, found in publications of the day like Ernst Haeckle’s Kunstformen der Natur, manifested itself in a proliferation of flowers in French art and design and in an intese investigation of flora where artists rivaled botanists. This piece borders on abstraction. The Orchid, splayed open and surrounded by copious pollen spores, is imbued with feminine sensuality. The imaginative color palate and curving lines surpass the glass design standards of the day and render this piece a beguiling objet d’art. Circa 1900. Signed, ''Daum, Nancy''.
