A French Art Nouveau gilt, patinated bronze and ivory sculpture, titled “La Femme au Voile” by the renowned painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme. This work explores the mystery and sensuality of the veiled woman and expresses the turn-of-the-century French fascination with the Middle East and North Africa. The veils she wears are textured after the textiles from the Near East that were much in vogue in Paris of 1900. The ivory itself is an exotic African material. Pictured in: Dynamic Beauty: Sculpture of Art Nouveau Paris, by Macklowe Gallery, The Studley Press, 2011, p. 132.
