Macklowe Gallery - New York

Tiffany Mosaic Week

Macklowe Gallery’s Tiffany Mosaic week has come to a close, and we are proud to announce that it was a great success! After months of planning the week kicked off with a book signing featuring author Edith Crouch and her recently published “The Mosaics of Louis Comfort Tiffany.” This event was a celebration of the partnership Macklowe Gallery shared with the author, guiding Crouch in her research on Louis Comfort Tiffany and his wonderful mosaics. The book signing, held on a crisp October night was attended by over 70 clients, guests, and friends of Macklowe Gallery who enjoyed an extensive talk and slideshow by Crouch, refreshments, and the opportunity to have their own copy of the book personalized and signed by the author. It was a fun and educational experience for all!

Accompanying the book signing was an exhibition of gorgeous and rare Tiffany Studios mosaic works of art, graciously lent to the Gallery from private collections. Highlights included a mosaic plaque featuring exotic parrots with brilliant plumage made from shimmering chameleon like glass that changed ever so slightly in color as the lights and surroundings shifted. Also on prominent display was a large, exquisitely detailed Dragonfly table lamp with green/blue turtle back tiles, and blue and green mosaic on a bronze base, which is currently for sale in the Gallery. Other special pieces included a wood and mosaic box in vibrant stripes and a writing set complete with Tiffany Studios fountain pen. The pieces remained on display in the Gallery for a week for all those who couldn’t attend the book signing or wanted another peek at the enchanting items.

The next day Benjamin and Lary accompanied a group to Saint Michaels Church to view their original Tiffany Studios windows, chandeliers, and mosaics. Sheldon Barr, noted author, art glass expert, and friend of Macklowe Gallery, gave a guided tour of the church, illuminating its many treasures. Guests and experts alike came away with new knowledge and a deeper appreciation of the beauty created by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Thanks to Sheldon and Jean Ballard Terepka, archivist at St. Michael’s, for their kindness and expertise. In the future we hope to have similar visits to Tiffany treasures in the New York area. Stay tuned for upcoming events, we hope you can join us!
