A Tiffany Masterpiece for the New MFA

Antiques & Fine Arts Magazine - Autumn/Winter 2010 - Louis Comfort Tiffany’s colored glass window, Parakeets and Gold Fish Bowl, was recently donated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, by MFA board president Barbara L. Alfond and her husband Theodore. This window was created by Tiffany to showcase his firm’s design and manufacturing skills at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. A team of trained artisans was responsible for the glass selection and manipulation that went into its composition. It is one of the first Tiffany windows to contain rough and polished pieces of opalescent and “Favrile” glass. Curator, Nonie Gadsden’s article “A Tiffany Masterpiece for the New MFA” appears in the 2010 Autumn/Winter Antiques and Fine Arts catalogue and provides a detailed discussion of the window’s unique glass construction. Parakeets and Gold Fish Bowl will be unveiled in the Robert P. and Carol T. Henderson Gallery for Art of the Aesthetic Movement at the November opening of the new Art of the Americas Wing.
