Gustav Klimt

(1862- 1918) An Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession. Klimt's primary subject was the female body and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. He transformed traditional allegory and symbolism into a new language which was more overtly sexual, and hence more disturbing. Klimt's paintings have brought some of the highest prices recorded for individual works of art.
